So geeks are cool now.... huhSubmitted by BooDy on Tue, 2010-08-17 02:17.
Warning: if you're actually crazy enough to follow and like my blog (ha!) then this post is probably not your cup of tea, I've had this thought on my mind for some time and I just wanted to rant about it here. Okay, so apparently nowadays it's cool to be a "geek". Maybe people are realizing that geeks actually make more money on the long run, it's easier for them to find jobs, they're more educated than most people whether they went to a good college or not. It's how geeks have been since the beginning of time (except of course for those poor scientists some hundred years ago who dared to challenge religion, tough luck dude). I don't really have a solid conclusion to why did this realization happen in the past few years, personally I blame "the big bang theory" (a great TV show by the way). Anyway it's becoming really annoying. I keep bumping into those people everywhere now. Come to think of it I first spotted them in college 7 years ago. Geeks gatherings, twitter, workplace, etc. pretentious people who don't know what the hell are they talking about. Yeah of course I get it, you pretend to be something you're not to impress someone so you can get a job or cut a deal on something, I understand. But it really is frustrating. I mean all those years I got beaten up in school because I was the weird quiet kid who loves computers more than cars and now comes along a shmuck who doesn't know anything about science or even the difference between the millennium falcon, Heart of Gold, and serinity (yes, I put serinity next to legendary spaceships, I think firefly was a great show) and he wants to hang out with me because we're both "computer geeks who like sci-fi" what the hell is the matter with you?!? Of course you don't have to know everything, I mean who does anyway, I know I don't. But it's not a certain kind of knowledge I'm talking about, it's the act of pretending to know something that you don't. In that case it's either technology, science, vintage video games, or sci-fi literature. A friend of mine wanted us to speak klingon in the office, now when I tell this story in front of someone who doesn't know what klingon is I'd expect them to just shut up not say "yeah, it's cool to talk like yoda all the time". Dude, are you aware of how stupid you look right now? my friend who wants to speak klingon and would spend an hour debating with me about the true identity of Anakin Skywalker's father is a software engineer who loves computer games and sci-fi novels and movies, that is a geek, it would have been considered a sad thing 10 years ago to be like that but for some reason now it's not. I was watching an old episode of Frasier the other day and they were making fun of a guy because he had a signed picture of Spock, that was the mid 90s, now if you have a signed picture of Spock you'd be the center of attention. Why is that? I know I know, to some people it is sad if someone spends hours online, who loves sci-fi movies and finds it more interesting to discuss an article from MIT technology review than talk about cars and chicks. I know you're out there people so please do me a favor, keep thinking that and keep influencing your friends to think like you. I'd love it if it stays this way. But if it doesn't I'll be fine, it's okay, go ahead and pretend to know about software engineering just because you installed some CMS which was designed to be easily installed by morons like you, pretend that you've been using this platform or that operating system for years even though you only found out it exists two weeks ago, buy a MacBook because "it has superior hardware" for all I give a damn, knock yourself out. Just please keep me out of it. Don't pretend to know something in front of me or at least just don't drag me into a discussion because I will embarrass your sorry ass. |
